In this video Scott Geller talks about the pillars of self motivation and the importance of feeling empowered. Scott says the research shows the four pillars for self motivation are: Competency: Does the individual have the knowledge skills and abilities to perform the task? Consequences: What are the consequences for completing the task? Is it a carrot or a stick? | |
Choice: Does the individual have a choice or some degree of autonomy over how they complete the task?
Community: Does the individual have a group of people that he or she can ask for help?
As an adult instructor I can see how each of these pillars connect with adult learners in the classroom.
Competency: Is the difficulty of the material suited towards the competency of the learners? Their needs to a challenge that is manageable.
Consequences: Is the learning connected with a purpose outside the classroom that the learners can connect with? Can learners see how completing this learning will help them improve their performance at work?
Choice: Do learners have some autonomy in their own learning or are the course very prescriptive and constraining?
Community: Does the instructor help to create a positive learning environment where learners are comfortable asking one another for help?
Scott then goes on to talk about how important the feeling of empowerment is for individuals to be self motivated and presents three questions to determine if someone is feeling empowered:
What do you think of the four pillars for self motivation and the 3 questions to determine if someone is feeling empowered?

Scott then goes on to talk about how important the feeling of empowerment is for individuals to be self motivated and presents three questions to determine if someone is feeling empowered:
- Can you do it? Does the person have the time, knowledge and skills to accomplish the task?
- Will it work? Will the task answer the need it is supposed to fill?
- Is it worth it? Is it meaningful cause/does it line up with a purpose the individual can connect with?
